Tortilla flat is a series of short stories that centres on a wine loving, idealist ‘Danny’ and his opportunistic friends. The main protagonist ‘Danny’ spends the novel constantly conflicted by the good fortune he receives and his desire to be free.

They spend their days romancing about an ideal world, which often revolves around procuring wine at the expense of their friendships. While most of their intentions are admirable their choices often lead them into further trouble and their attempt to solve these issues is what makes the stories so comical.

The characters in the novel appear as caricatures, outlandish and exaggerated which is emphasised by the omniscient narrative voice. While the tone of the novel is humorous and light hearted, there is a darker undercurrent that takes the reader by surprise. As is often in Steinbeck novels the great depression has a strong social and economic presence.

+    The book is very comical and the characters are charming.

+    Interesting perspectives such as the idea of whether freedom and personal possessions are opposites.

+   The great depressions influence shown in the minute details of the novel.

+  The ending (I won’t write any spoilers).

Some of the stories felt repetitive.                                                8stamp-814699_640
